ROUND ROCK -- Recovering from a bumpy start, Dell Computer Corp.'s national television advertising campaign is up and running in the company's first major effort to strengthen the Dell brand.

The $70 million campaign is designed to raise Dell's profile among business executives, information-system managers, even college students. Unlike commercials that include details about products and prices, the TV spots are designed to prompt viewers to add Dell to their list of potential PC suppliers.

"If we are considered, we are one of the industry's best at closing deals," said Scott Helbing, Dell's vice president of corporate brand strategy.

Dell executives believe that the straightforward commercials, which were produced by the global agency BBD&O, convey the company's direct style better than an aborted campaign by the J. Walter Thompson agency................
