Delta orders 49 Boeing jets worth $3 bln

SEATTLE, Dec 22 (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines Inc. has ordered 49 Boeing Co. (NYSE:BA - news) jets valued at nearly $3.1
billion in the past nine months as part of a plan to modernize and standardize its fleet, the manufacturer said Tuesday.

The orders, for delivery in 1999 and 2000, include the purchase of 24 jets previously disclosed by Delta and 25 new orders, including exercised options, Boeing
said.

Since June 1, Delta has ordered 14 next-generation 737-800s, eight 757-200s and three 767-300ERs.

Previously Delta had disclosed plans to buy an additional 16 next-generation 737-800s, six 757-200s and two 777-200ERs.

The new jets will allow for some capacity growth and also will allow the carrier to accelerate the retirement of its older L-1011s and Boeing 727s.

In March 1997 Delta announced plans to make Boeing its exclusive supplier of aircraft for the next 25 years.
