jon,

Necessity breeds invention. There was no language in existence 10 years ago to efficiently control business processing on multi-platform Client Server systems. So does it make sense to criticize SAP for being the first to come up with one?

Codd and Date defined the relational model for applications which the other vendors followed. Sap did not, they invented Abap. Why they did that - I dont know - I actually think they were working on a new version of their product for say, unix and during that development process C/S took off. They then retrofitted Abap as some sort of proprietary applications platform to sit on SQL. That is not the same thing as engineering your product from the ground up in SQL. And that is why they pulled ahead, because they had a head start on something that certainly was an approach but not really the right approach, from a purely theoretical perspective.
