KANATA, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 22, 1998--
NEWBRIDGE(TSE:NNC.) (NYSE:NN.N) Newbridge Chosen for Superior
Performance, Manageability, Interoperability, and Support for
Value-Added Services.
Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN.N; TSE: NNC) today announced that
TELUS Advanced Communications has selected the Company's comprehensive
Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) solution for its portfolio
of DSL-enabled services.
The Newbridge(r) MainStreet(r) ADSL products and management
software comprise the foundation for the TELUS DSL service portfolio.
TELUS Advanced Communications will immediately deploy 4,000 ADSL lines
at 41 sites in Alberta. This number will expand to over 10,000 lines
within the next year. The Newbridge solution enables TELUS to offer a
broad range of value-added services, such as local area network (LAN)
to LAN interconnect, consumer and business Internet access,
teleworking services, and wholesale Internet service provider (ISP)
high-speed Internet access.
The Newbridge solution was selected because of the product's
superior performance, manageability and support for value-added
services. It integrates high-density ADSL line cards into the
industry-leading Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress(tm) 36170
Multiservices Switch. The switch offers TELUS Advanced Communications
unparalleled scalability and standards compliance, enabling the
Newbridge ADSL solution to interoperate with products from leading
modem vendors, such as 3Com and Efficient Networks.
"We chose Newbridge because of its support for a wide range of
DSL-enabled servicour customers technology-transparent, high-speed, va
services that differentiate us from our competitors," said Steven
Koles, Director of Internetworking Services, TELUS Advanced
Communications. "For example, the solution allows us to provide
fully-managed, dedicated Internet access, in contrast to the shared
Internet access offered by cable operators."
The Newbridge ADSL solution also fully integrates with the
existing TELUS Advanced Communications asynchronous transfer mode
(ATM) and management infrastructure. TELUS Advanced Communications has
already deployed MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switches to form
the backbone of its data network. ADSL cards can therefore simply be
added to the existing switches as well as additional switches being
deployed to support the TELUS DSL-enabled services. A single
MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switch, compliant with the ATM
Forum TM 4.0 (traffic management specifications), supports 1,500 ADSL
lines and is architected to support over 40,000 lines. Service
management is provided by the Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress
46020 Network Manager, enabling TELUS to efficiently roll out and
seamlessly manage their high volume DSL-enabled services.
The Newbridge ADSL solution, launched in May 1998, uses the
latest in ATM and discrete multi-tone (DMT) silicon technology. Today,
more than 30 service providers throughout the world are deploying the
standards-compliant ADSL solution from Newbridge Networks.
"The Newbridge solution delivers a powerful, integrated system
that opens additional revenue streams for service providers and is
highly affordable from a total cost of ownership perspective," said
Conrad Lewis, Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President,
Access Products Group, Newbridge Networks. "We are excited to be
working with an innovative service provider like TELUS, where we will
see the benefits of our solution reach their full potential."

TELUS Selects and Deploys Newbridge ADSL Services Solution

This is good news for several reasons, besides DSL revenues.

1) shows Alcatel doesn't own the DSL market.
2) shows DSL is being deployed by major Canadian telcos, indicating there is a viable business model.
3) spurs need for more backbone gear,i.e., NN switches.

Nice win, indeed.
