Noticed this on agn3d.com:

9) Does the Rage 128 do true 24/32-bit z-buffer? The reason why I ask this
is because under Quake II (after setting the desktop color depth to 24 or
32-bit), the game reports it will use the desktop color depth for color
(32-bit), but it will only use a 16-bit z-buffer. I've ran benchmarks on
nVidia's TNT where I'd switch the desktop to 32-bits and then run Quake
II (under 24-bit z)---am I supposed to do something specific with the
configuration? From Andrew Sanchez (MaximumPC)

"The Rage 128 supports 16 bit and true 24/32 bit z buffer. The
current driver defaults z buffer value to 16bit, even when selecting
32 bit as your desktop color depth. Future drivers will let you
select the z buffer value to be used in games or applications."

I wonder is the reason for the great 32-bit perfromance so far is that the z-buffer is only operating at 16-bit?
