12/22/1998 - Toyota 'Prius' Hybrid EV Sales Pass 16,000

Japan - Toyota Motor Corp. has already sold 16,000 of its innovative "Prius" hybrid-electric vehicles since beginning sales in Japan less than one year ago, reports the Los Angeles Times. The $16,000 five-passenger sedan uses a small, efficient gasoline-powered engine in conjunction with an electric motor to achieve city/highway fuel economy of 66 miles per gallon on the Japanese test cycle, which places more emphasis on city driving. Toyota is the first automaker to offer a hybrid car. Rival automakers Nissan (News Notes 12/15/98) and Honda have also announced they will be offering hybrids; Honda's hybrid is a two-passenger model (News Notes 12/21/98). Toyota said it plans to sell the Prius in the United States in the 2000 model year (News Notes 8/27/98).

So the duel of the "supercars" continues. In less than a year 16,000 Prius' are sold while Bat has yet to sell even one vehicle that was not returned by an unsatisfied customer.

Is it technology (or the lack thereof), fraud or bad management that is tanking this company? Now that Lotsaguano's misleading posts and outright lies have been quashed perhaps we can return to a serious discussion of the facts.
