<<I plan on shorting the airlines as booking for end-of-year vacations decrease. I expect the market to price it in by June 99. The international carriers are the most vulnerable.>>

Good idea. I had friends flying from Hawaii to LA right when Republic(?) and Northwest merged. The companies had tested the heck out of their reservation systems before merging them into one. When my friends arrived in LA a rep came on the plane right away and said anyone ticketed to continue on should absolutely not leave their seat for any reason; although they could if they wanted to take the risk. Reason was the reservation system was all screwed up and LA airport was full of people who had tickets for every seat on every NW flight coming in. Obviously the "waiters" were royally P.O.'d

My friends stayed right in their seats. When they arrived at their destination they said it was the same there. People jam packed in the airport; almost every seat double-sold.

Needless to say, my friends have already decided they will not be flying around the country around 01/01/2000.
