ST buying CMOS sensor supplier

GENEVA--ST Microelectronics today announced an agreement to acquire
Vision Group PLC, a supplier of CMOS image sensors based in Edinburgh,
Scotland. Under the terms of the agreement, ST will offer £0.62 ($1.04) per
share totaling £23.3 million ($39.1 million).

Vision Group's products are used in desktop video conferencing, digital still
cameras, security, biometrics, automotive, toys and have various industrial
applications. The company has 85 employees.

"The acquisition of a leading technology in CMOS Imaging Sensors will
strengthen ST Microelectronics' leadership in system-on-chip in several key
applications such as computer peripherals, digital video and automotive," said
Philippe Geyres, corporate vice president of ST Microelectronics. "Being
linked to a broad range supplier such as ST Microelectronics will allow Vision
Group to develop its fast-growing imaging business around its existing team,"
he promised.

ST said analysts have predicted that the market for CMOS imaging chips will
pass the $500 million dollar mark in five years.
