Duke & Everyone ~ Amex Sector Spiders

Well Duke, you beat me to it! However, I'd like to contribute a few NEGATIVE items I uncovered from the AMEX preliminary prospectus dated 11/16/98, which I received 4 days ago. I have specifically expounded on the Tech Fund. Note that this may NOT be a true "tech" fund & may not provide fantastic returns. You be the judge. I have also provided a toll-free phone # to the AMEX.

XLB Basic Industries
XLV Consumer Svcs
XLP Consumer Staples
XLY Cyclical/Transporation
XLE Energy
XLF Financial
XLI Industrial
XLK Technology *
XLU Utilities

The S&P 500 is divided up into these 9 funds. As of 9/30/98, there are 77 companies incl'd in the Tech fund & technically NOT ALL are tech companies!

1. 6 DOW components: BA, EK, HWP, IBM, T, UTX
(that represents 20% of the DOW 30 co's)
2. 3 non-Dow gorillas: INTC, LU, MSFT
3. 1 Biotech: AMGN
4. 10 Defense mfgrs: BA, Gen'l Dynamics, BF Goodrich, Gen'l Dynamics, Harris, Lockheed, Northrop, Rockwell, Raytheon & TRW (defense represents 13% of 77 "tech" companies)
5. 18 Others: Automatic Data Processing, Equifax, EG&G, Sprint, , Gen'l Instrument, WW Grainger, Ikon Office Solutions, Moore, Millipore, Pitney Bowes, Perkin Elmer, Polaroid, Raychem, Tektronix, Thermo Electron, Thomas & Betts, Worldcom & Xerox.

* The Tech fund incls companies involved in the development & production of tech products. Those products incl products developed by defense mfgrs, telecommunications equip, microcomputer components, integrated computer circuits & process monitoring systems.

Words of wisdom & input are welcome!

Dick and all,

Christmas blessings to one and all. Thanks to all who take the time to contribute and share their p&f insights for all to learn from. This thread is truly a special place.

At Amex.com, there is a listing of the components of each index for the Amex Select Sector SPDR's. Here's a handy dandy link:

amex.com

With the sector work that is such an essential ingredient to p&f, these Amex Select Sector SPDR's seem to provide a great new way to capitalize on one of our strengths.

Warmest holiday wishes to each and everyone,

Bruce
