That is a market index fund, not a 500 index fund. I think most index 500 funds are required to own all the 500 stocks. If you look at the $64B Vanguard Index 500 fund (VFINX), this is what they say:

The fund seeks to provide investment results that correspond to the price and yield performance of publicly-traded common stocks, as represented by the Standard & Poor's 500 Composite Stock Price Index. It attempts to duplicate the investment performance of the S&P Index by owning all of the 500 stocks contained in the Index, appropriately weighted. The trust will seek to be fully invested in common stocks at all times, owning no fewer than the 200 stocks having the largest weightings in the index.

Concerning volatility, you might have a point. Had not thought about the effect of a decreased float, which would clearly increase volatility. All the more reason for a split :-)

The fidelity spartan fund is not a true index fund, just one that looks, smells, and ats like one. I wouldn't think this fund does much selling of the highly weighted issues, just those on the low end..ex-bottom 20%. I'm sure aol's weighting will place it iin the top 80%
