TLC,

I have a more sinister concept for some of the margin requirements. We all know that eventually the internuts will come back to reality. We just don't know when. When the event does happen, much of the unrealized capital gains will forever be lost if there aren't tons of shorted shares around. While it's true that right now the MMs would be taking a beating if they were naked shorting to supply to legitimate long buyers, when the crash happens (and it will happen), no one wants the little guy profiting from the event. So to eliminate the little guy, just raise the margin requirements beyond his reach. That will leave whatever shares are shorted in the hands of the big money players and those few MMs whose keen sense of smell detects blood on the horizon.
