CPQ Christmas Message altair19
(53/M/Mass.) Dec 22 1998
7:47PM EST

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a Prosignia was stirring, not even a mouse.

The long ‘s shares were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes St. Eckhard soon would been there.

The investors were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Year End earnings danced in their heads.

And Mamma in her net stock and I with my market cap,
Had just settled in for a long winter's nap.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter
I sprang from my portfolio to see what was the matter.
Away to Windows I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon, on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave luster of midday to NT below.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear
But a Porsche Twin Turbo and eight tiny reindeer,
With a silver haired driver, so lively and quick
I knew in a moment it must be Saint Eck.

More rapid than Servers his coursers they came
And he whistled and shouted and called them by name
“Now Mason!, now Rando! Now Rose and Winkler
On Strecker ! On Barth on Blackmoor and Seikman.
To the top of the Fortune 50, to the top of the wall
Make Q4! Make Q4! Make Q4 all!

In the heat of Houston before wild hurricanes fly
When they lead competition, mount to the sky
So up to the housetop the coursers they flew,
With a Porche full of dividends and St. Eckhard too.

And then, in a terrabyte, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof—
As I drew in my head, and was turning around
Down the Chimney St. Eckhard came with a bound.

He was dressed in a business suit from his head to his foot
And his MBA all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of dividends he had flung on his back
The IT leader just opening his pack.
His ROE how it twinkled ….his ROIC how fine
The channels they loved him ….his products on time.

He had told everyone he wanted to grow
So he made acquisitions , 3 in a row.
The base of his laptop he held with his hand
Hoping the analysts would soon join his band

He was trustworthy , a man of his word
Only good news on Wall St was heard.
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work
And filled investors stockings…then turned with a jerk.

And laying a finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod , up the chimney he rose
He sprang to his Porche, to his staff gave a whistle
And away they all flew…. like the down of a thistle

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight
“We're going to hit $120, and to all a good night

Merry Christmas CPQ investors…..

Jim, that is exactly my point. The consensus has been burned before and is twice as skeptical as they were last year. CPQ has obviously guided analysts through several meetings throughout the quarter on what their business prospects will be- CPQ is moving up IN SPITE of the dubious reputation it established last year as a channel stuffer.

As far as your contention about cost of sales- when making projections, there are so many assumptions that have to be made, any miscalculation could send projections out of whack. That is why you have such divergence in the "true" valuations of internet stocks. The more variables there are, the greater chance the final calculation will be incorrect.
