Jim, insider selling is a mixed signal at best. 2 of the best companies I own (SUNW and EMC) has had substantial insider selling for as long as I've owned them without any correlation to the company's prospects.

They have preferred to reward executives based on merit and the company's accomplishments. These stock options have also made many millionares in Redmond, Washington.

You're right that insider selling should be looked at:

FYI, I seem to recall that Mikey D. has sold many many many more times the stock in Dell than the Compaq guys put together.

What you are missing on the cost of sales is the addition of the direct model. I am not sure if Compaq will hurt Dell much short term but folks like Gateway, Micron etc will get killed by the Compaq juggernaut in Direct Sales.
