News From Japan: NATIONAL: Health ministry panel gives Viagra the green light 12/22/98 Asahi Shimbun / Asahi Evening News BUN/ASAHI EVENING NEWS The anti-impotence drug will officially be approved in January and could hit store shelves as early as spring Asahi Shimbun An advisory panel to the Health and Welfare Ministry decided at a special meeting Monday to allow the production and import of the U.S. anti-impotence drug Viagra , paving the way for sales as early as spring, government sources said. The Central Pharmaceutical Affairs Council is expected to report its decision to the health minister on Thursday, the sources said. The ministry will officially approve the use of Viagra as a prescription drug in mid-January, just six months after Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Inc., the Tokyo-based affiliate of U.S. Pfizer Inc., submitted an application for approval to sell the drug on July 24, the sources said. The decision to approve the drug after such an unusually short period is a response to the growing risk of accidents arising from its improper use. Although the drug is prohibited in Japan, increasing amounts are being brought into the country for sale in the black market. In July, a man in his 60s died after taking an improper dosage. Men with heart problems who use nitroglycerin are at risk due to a Viagra side effect of causing a sudden drop in blood pressure. Other adverse side effects include headaches, flushed cheeks and a temporary disorder in color sense. Doctors will be allowed to prescribe the drug to patients who have been suffering from impotence for three months and longer, the sources said.
