Clark:

I find it extremely hard to believe that Qualcomm has patented every aspect of a CDMA system, thereby forcing (perhaps a bad word choice, but it is 11:30) its competitors to either license or not produce a CDMA system.

I do agree that having the blocking patent(s) is/are extremely rare and you have given good reasoning as to why Qualcomm might have effectively blocked another entity from implementing a different form of CDMA.

I still, though, find it extremely hard to believe that Qualcomm has patented each and every aspect of a CDMA system and that no other company/entity can come up with a different implementation.

Earlier today someone asked if I would explain just what the upgrade path is from IS-95 to CDMA-2000. The best explanation I know of is the following. Go to cdg.org

On the left of your screen click on the button that says "Third Generation". Then, scroll down to the bottom of the page to the group entitled "Detailed Information". Just below this is a link to "CDMA Development Group White Paper: Third Generation Systems". This paper is excellent and gives a good idea of the upgrade path from IS-95 to CDMA-2000.

My apologies to whom ever asked for this. I glanced at the message at work but was distracted and forgot before I could answer it.
