I am taking no position on the morality of abortion. However, it takes a willful act to not distinguish between a baby and a fetus. Tell me, do you also refrain from distinguishing between a toddler and a octagenarian?

I understand the Catholic Church, in it's infinite wisdom, traditionally distinguished between a fetus and a baby. A baby that died, even if it was alive only a short time, was accorded a funeral, and all efforts were made give the baby a baptism. A spontaneously aborted fetus was not accorded that treatment.

Those who refuse to distinguish between a baby and fetus are usually doing so to score an ideological point. Yes, it's shoddy, and I would say, even corrupt, logic.

The ability to make distinctions is the hallmark of an educated and discerning mind. Note I have said nothing about what action should or should not be taken based on the distinction between a baby and a fetus, or an infant and an octagenarian. But a basic intellectual honesty requires that such distinctions be made. They are the starting point of honest inquiry.
