Terayon Up 13% Along With Internet Sector, Analysts Say

NEW YORK -- Terayon Communication Systems (TERN) shares strengthened by 15% Monday, drafting in the wake of high-flying Internet stocks.

"I've noticed that their stock tends to do this when the Internets are up," Salomon Smith Barney analyst Elliot Prince said.

Company spokesman John Hamburger said the company released no news, and declined to comment directly on Monday's stock movement, explaining that Terayon is in its quiet period. The Santa Clara, Calif., company plans to release fourth-quarter financial results on Jan. 21.

Terayon designs modems for television companies, which use the devices to provide commercial and residential Internet access. One of the companies using Terayon technology in its network backbones, At Home Corp. (ATHM), saw its stock surge Monday following bullish comments by a Morgan Stanley Dean Witter analyst in Barron's.

According to Prince, Terayon tends to particularly shadow At Home shares.

Joel Achramowicz, an analyst with Preferred Capital Markets, said all-around Internet euphoria may partly explain Monday's advance, but noted that because Terayon has a thin stock float, relatively light volume can yank its price around.

Terayon shares traded recently at 39, up 5 1/8, or 15.1%. Nasdaq volume reached 279,000 shares, compared with the daily average of 181,300.

The company has about 16.5 million shares outstanding, Terayon's Hamburger said.

In November, the company and industry competitor Broadcom Corp. (BRCM) agreed to collaborate on the writing of a cable modem standard, which will be included in the industry standard, Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification.

Shares of Broadcom also moved higher Wednesday, adding 6, or 5.4%, to 118. And issues of cable-modem peer Com21 Inc. (CMTO) rose 1 3/4, or 10.2%, to 18 7/8.
