UPS...

Long, long ago and far, far away (well not that far away actually <g>) I did some time in a big iron data center with a SERIOUS UPS setup. What is relevant is that many inappropriate things got plugged in to the UPS mostly because the regular plugs got used up and here was this red plug, and people didn't have 3-way things handy and well people will be people. There was some amazement about the clock radios and lights still working during a power outage late one night!

I suggest you plan to either over-size your UPS or tightly control what get plugged in.

Well, FWIW I run two machines from 1 UPS (as described here
a while back). As far as running the machines, it works
fine and it does minimize maintenance, but of course
it leaves me vulnerable to UPS failures (also described
here a while back). Not critical for me, but for an
installation of the size you described, on that score
alone I would suggest at least two largish UPSs rather
than one. (Do you really think 6-9KVA will run all that
gear? Maybe so, but it sounds more like at least two
would be needed anyhow.)

Another consideration is orderly shutdown, especially for
your servers, if you're running more than one machine
on a UPS. (I have this problem with my setup, potentialy,
but as of now all my shutdowns are disorderly<g>.) You
will have to have a serial port multiplier if you want
to run shutdown software for multiple machines on the
same UPS.

I discussed this once with APC tech support. In their
case at least the serial interface is one-way (from UPS
to PC) and multiple connectivity of serial ports
was not a problem, provided you can manage it physically
(well, electrically). I don't know if there is a
standard power management protocol or if it's all
proprietary to the supplier. Anyway, this is a point
to investigate.

>>(digital imaging)<<

Is 3d imaging anything like 3D modeling?

Do you have any thoughts on configuring a Wintel machine (NT) for 3D modeling? Ballpark price $10,000. Engineering applications..overlaying aerial photography on 3d designs..3D Max and other..

What should I look for? Motherboard based on the GX chipset? 1GB RAM or more? High end Video card? Dual Xeon CPU's?

Integraph? with Integraph $2000+/- video card??

Can't help much with the UPS. We use individual UPS's for individual workstations. Mostly a knee jerk reaction to several power failures. Logistically it would be difficult to do it any other way. Fast easy basic protection. Guaranteed battery maintenace issues.

Dan

buying one large UPS

or optionally break down into subgroups by PC and Mac since the management software is different. Of the big three ups ( APC, Opti-ups, Best) only apc and Best have Mac sw. It would be good to use the same sw thru-out for consistency sake. Maybe make use of the standalone ups you already have and gang up just the unprotected machines. Seems some grouping solution inbetween all standalone or one really big un would be optimal.. these really big ups would also require a different type 'wall' plug.

How about a call to a power protection only company for some advice/possible sales? These guys seem to work with protecting multi platform enviroments on a daily basis.
