Wall Street Stocks Seen Opening Mixed To Higher
Reuters - 08:41 a.m. Dec 23, 1998 Eastern

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street stocks are expected to open
mixed to higher Wednesday even as markets slow heading into
the Christmas holiday.

Analysts said profit warnings from U.S. corporations could be
offset by unexpectedly good earnings announced by 3Com
Corp. after the close of trading Tuesday.

U.S. economic data is unlikely to move markets.

Larry Wachtel, an analyst at Prudential Securities, said the focus
could be on individual stocks after the Dow Jones industrial
average closed up 55.61 points at 9,044.46 Tuesday.

In the broader market, declining issues led advances 1,732 to
1,251 on active volume of 678 million shares on the New York
Stock Exchange.

The technology-laced Nasdaq composite index fell 17.05
points, or 0.80 percent, to 2,120.98, a day after closing at a
new high.

''The techs have risen pretty dramatically and were up for some
profit-taking,'' said Barry Hyman, market strategist for
Ehrenkrantz, King Nussbam Inc. ''I think people were seeking
a little bit of safety in the Dow stocks.''
