U.S. may let Iraq increase oil sales

By Toni Marshall and Betsy Pisik
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

he United States offered yesterday to boost the amount of oil Iraq can sell under the oil-for-food program because of plummeting world oil prices, but warned it would still veto any effort by France or Russia to scrap economic sanctions.
Undersecretary of State Thomas Pickering said the U.N. Security Council would review the sanctions if Iraq cooperated with weapons inspectors of the U.N. Special Commission.

"Oil for food ... would be the one area where we could see perhaps the possibility of more forward movement, particularly if the humanitarian report indicated there was a greater need for food," Mr. Pickering said.
