Pleae indulge my INEXCUSABLE ignorance, but what are "white boxes" if not PCs? Does Compaq sell its PCs in "white boxes"? If IM sales of "white boxes" decline, does that mean that CPQ sales are dropping too???

Is a "white box" the opposite of a "black box"? ;-)

Richie and John: Just come back from Christmas Shopping and my SI board is showing a day range of 9-44!

I don't know what all the fuss is about. I will be buying more CPQ. I'm glad they have given up the nonesense about networking, they could never have competed with the LU and CSCO and NORTEL's. A pipe dream of a meglomanic CEO. CPQ will do better building-in network compatability and co-operating with the networking big boys.

John, I agree with the opinion in the IBM related piece about the second half. I thought that in a recent interview EP made a strong and convincing case that sales would continue strong in the 1st and 2nd quarter 1999 because of YK2000 compliance. But he made a weak case for strong sales into the 2nd half 1999. He actually said that September will bring back-to-school buying. But the question being put to him was whether, given that many purchases may be brought forward to 1st and 2nd quarter 1999, where will the 2nd half buying come from.
