Hardline,
I am a CSCO employee (this is public knowledge on SI). My focus, however, is on voice and video applications. I am actually pretty weak on the data side (certainly relative to other CSCO types).

I was responding to you specific questions and therefore tailored my answers to those questions.

I, and Cisco, are very familiar with the voice players and know where the longterm (as well as short term) competition will come from. Again, I was responding to your specific questions.

As to the merger of equals between LU/CSCO, I wouldn't count on it for a number of reasons (culture is key as well). (disclaimer: I have no special insight into this issue and I am specifically not speaking for CSCO on this issue.)

I have stated on other threads that CSCO's success is not necessarily based on having the fastest widget but from providing the most complete business solution. This is made up of a lot of different factors including technology, support, vision and as you said alternative business relationships. I don't necessarily agree with your statement that CSCO was behind other data networking companies in 98...maybe for your specific requirements, but there are many areas that CSCO is ahead of the industry and the industry continues to ignore these areas as important. An example of this is focused solutions for legacy systems (specifically IBM applications). This approach will be important in the strategy entering the voice market. This goes to my complete solution statement.

Tom

P.S. I don't want to turn this into a CSCO discussion on this thread. I try not to focus my discussions on CSCO since my objectivity would obviously be in question, regardless of my efforts to remain so. If you want further clarification, let's go to private message.
