Philips Electronics, flush from $6 billion sale of 75% stake in music company PolyGram, is said to be in talks to buy General Instrument (GI). Philips declined comment, but possible acquisition would be consistent with Philips Consumer Electronics CEO Adri Baan's statements at Comdex in Nov. that company will focus on digital technology including set-top boxes (STBs). GI is supplier of digital cable STBs and IRDs for Primestar satellite system. GI, which has $5.7 billion market value, also has been approached by Lucent and Cisco, analysts said. Sony also bought $180 million (5%) of GI earlier this year. Philips is nearing end of 4-year reorganization that has included selling stakes in Bang & Olufsen, Grundig and PolyGram and is planning to close 1/3 of its 260 factories by 2002. As part of restructuring, Philips cut 750 jobs at communications and CE factories in Singapore -- 9.4% of its work force there, spokesman confirmed. Reduction came on top of 200 jobs eliminated in May. Plants make audio equipment, TVs, cellular phones. Philips employs 8,000 in Singapore. It also eliminated 448 jobs at TV tube plants in Brazil in Nov. after demand for tubes plunged 31% (TVD Nov 30 p14).
