INTCfan -
I covered the history of CPQ's networking products group on the CPQ thread. While this was not one of CPQ's finest ventures, today's action is a cleanup of something they did in 1995, when they were a very different company. CPQ is in the process of consolidating all of their assets, some of which overlap because of the DEC acquisition. This is a sensible and prudent business choice. The products don't go away, the resources are just transferred into the product groups which would logically use them.

CPQ has been pruning based on where investment will yield the best growth, and creation of a separate network business outside of CPQ's own use of those products was just not one of those growth opportunities.

In comparing Dell to Compaq in these terms, Dell is the sure winner.

I see you are one of the DELL vs. CPQ class of investor. I hold nearly equal positions in both stocks, and I don't see this as an either-or choice. The dynamics of these companies are increasingly different.

Sorry to hear you were out of CPQ over the last few months, you missed some easy money. Good luck in your investments.
