U.S. Government Accuses EU of Standards Preemption

European Union

Summary:

8:22:10 AM 12/23/98 High-ranking U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky, Commerce Secretary William
Daley and FCC Chairman William Kennard, are concerned that the European Union may be trying to pre-empt a uniform international wireless standard. In a complaint filed
yesterday, they asked for assurance that U.S. 3G technology will be able to compete in Europe at the same time and on an equal footing with those developed by
European companies. Although the ongoing standards process isn't expected to conclude until late next year, certain Euro countries are planning to auction 3G spectrum
prior to a standards vote, thus cutting all but Europeans from introducing next-generation wireless products and services. Reported by Reuters. No further information
