Swami: Gifts from the NFL

Ho, ho, ho everybody.

It's been a long night, but you should have seen the Swami's magic carpet
outdistance Santa and his reindeer.

We had a lot of gifts to deliver. Hope all of you were happy, especially you
young girls and boys, because after all, Christmas is for you.

It's the time of year when we sip on a little eggnog and reflect on what's gone
on. And I've gotta tell you, when it comes to the NFL there sure were a lot of
gifts given out.

Why just this morning, in the snow of Minnesota,
I'm sure I saw Randall Cunningham say to Randy
Moss, "just run to the Douglas Fir over there and
I'll hit you."

Sure enough, these two have been at it all day --
and all season for that matter. And if one of these
passes happens to be incomplete, Randall says to
Randy, "hey, just run to the Birch tree this time."
And sure enough, that works for a long
touchdown.

What about the gift of perfection?

What Denver did to tempt fate -- not to mention
the record of the 1972 Dolphins -- was one of the
truly great feats of this or any other year. Going 13-0, while defending your
Super Bowl crown?

Mike Shanahan, John Elway and company ... thank you for your gift of
dreaming of reaching the unreachable star. Not to mention Terrell Davis and
his quest for 2,000 yards.

How about the sheer joy of unwrapping the present that's been Doug Flutie?

Eight years in the Great White North, and he responds with this?

He's far from the Sugar Plum Fairy too many teams thought he was in the
past. He's the reason the Bills have been dreaming playoffs since an 0-3 start.

How about wrapping your present in old wrapping paper -- like old AFL
uniforms -- and returning to the playoffs two years after you were 1-15. Quite
a present Bill Parcells and his troops have given to Jets fans.

Speaking of coming from nowhere. Those Atlanta Falcons have been quite a
surprise package of the running, throwing and defense. Now if we could just
give Dan Reeves our heartfelt holiday wishes for a speedy recovery, I'm sure
it'll help.

How about the possible playoff gift from places that never ever have a right to
dream about such things.

Like in Arizona, where Jake Plummer has helped put Christmas lights on the
cacti. And in New Orleans, where Mike Ditka has hung mistletoe all over
Bourbon Street.

And how about watching the old warriors remain at the top of their craft.

Like Bruce Smith in Buffalo ... Reggie White in Green Bay, who's sack total is
truly the gift of surprise ... And Steve Young -- supposedly one hit away from
a career decision -- throwing and running as good as, if not better than, he's
ever done it.

We could go on and on, because not only 'tis the season to be jolly, 'tis been a
season full of great gifts and many surprises -- all wrapped with a bow.

Thank you all for your giving spirit at this time of year.

Well, the Swami was 29-28 going into week 16. Now he needs a gift or two
this final week to assure himself of a playoff bid after squandering a big lead
earlier on. In the spirit of the season, we fully expect to get them.

After a 2-2 showing last week, we stand at 31-30. Here are our holiday
tidings.

49ers 30, Rams 10

Packers 23, Bears 13

Colts 24, Panthers 17

Buccaneers 19, Bengals 17

Cardinals 17, Chargers 13

And I heard the Swami exclaim as he rode out of sight, Merry Christmas to
all, and to all a good night.
