Interesting read: E-shoppers: clicked, browsed, stayedcbs.marketwatch.com By Frank Barnako, CBS MarketWatch Last Update: 11:40 AM ET Dec 23, 1998 Listen to Internet Daily The number of visitors to online shopping Web sites grew slightly during the third week of the season, according to market researchers Media Metrix. Site visits rose 4 percent vs. the second week, about double the number of online shoppers calculated in November. Media Metrix is monitoring a sample of online e-tailers, including sites such as Amazon.com, (AMZN), Hollywood Video's (HLYW) Reel.com and Cyberian Outpost (COOL). "This huge run up in traffic bodes well for e-commerce results this season, and in the future," said Media Metrix senior vice president Robert Ivins. Analyzing the data for CBS.MarketWatch.com, Ivins pointed out useful demographic findings. "More women are going to clothing retailers, than are going to toys or than are on the Web in general." This kind of qualitative information, he said, should be useful to retailers trying to promote business efficiently. "If I were a retailer, I would exploit the fact that, for instance, a third of my visitors are going to sites in a different category, and use that as a guide for undertaking cross promotions," Ivins said. Ivins also pointed out, among all shopping sites measured, the ratio of men to women shoppers was about even. "This equalization just might add credence to the long-held theory that women shop early and we men wait until the last minute," added Ted Hawthorne, Media Metrix's research vice president. "The gender shift was sparked by an increase in the actual number of men between 18-34 and 35-49 years of age and fewer women in the 35-49 age break," he explained. Time-Warner playing CDnow tune? Online music site CDnow (CDNW) reportedly has had talks with Time Warner (TWX) about a possible investment. Without confirming the story, a Time Warner spokesman said the company is talking with "a lot of people in the Internet sphere" and "you will see some announcement from us in the next couple of months, ZDnet reported. Time Warner previously has indicated it wants to increase its e-commerce activities. The report speculated that if Time Warner and CDnow got together, the music company's co-founder, Jason Olim, would be given the task of developing a new e-commerce division.
