Kantor Named Among 'Ten to Watch" for 1999

William Rouhana, chairman and CEO of WinStar Communications, hand-picked Nate Kantor to help navigate his brainchild through the perils of monopoly busting. Kantor's got the experience: He started working at MCI when the company had only 200 employees. He moved on to run its Northeast business and later founded MCI's international company.

"I lived an exciting life there, but WinStar is more exciting than MCI," says Kantor, now president and chief operating officer of WinStar. The upcoming year in particular, he believes, will mark a "defining moment" for WinStar. The company just negotiated a $2 billion equipment financing deal with Lucent Technologies that will allow it to speed up its broadband wireless buildout plans, both domestically and internationally.

"We are looking at opportunities to work with Lucent to accelerate those plans to 100 cities worldwide," Kantor says. In addition to big growth plans, WinStar also hopes to take the lead in creating a new advertising paradigm for the local competitive market. "There has been little exciting marketing in the local market," Kantor says. WinStar hopes to change that with the launch of what he calls "the most exciting marketing campaign in the history of the local market."

With competition heating up and with companies such as WinStar launching notable campaigns, the local arena might follow the aggressive marketing precedent set by long-distance companies when that segment opened up, he says.

In Kantor's view, WinStar is in a unique position to respond to real marketplace demand. Fiber, which some say reaches as few as 3% of the nation's office buildings, clearly isn't a viable solution for many businesses. With enough licenses--at a high frequency in the largest chunks ever offered--to cover more than 50 major markets in the U.S., WinStar can provide that viable solution.

Such a footprint offers Winstar a national opportunity to be a local company--an opportunity Kantor says no other company has.

His vision for Winstar, like that for MCI, is to take it "from ground zero to a multibillion-dollar company."

In my opinion, his recommendations are valid. Of course, that doesn't mean he hasn't been wrong but, all in all, he's good.
