Yes, it is possible, though unlikely the central banks will settle for cash. They would have to admit to their constituents that 25-35% of their gold is no longer in the vaults! Yes, purely paper transactions are possible. I don't know how many purely paper transactions there are out there although I've heard the Fed, for instance, made quite a bit of money selling calls on gold. All I know is the 8000 tons short position estimate is PHYSICALLY UNCOVERED. Which CBs have shorts, covered or no, again, I don't know and I doubt they'd want anyone to know.
