Rainmaker,

I believe the whole key of adding higher speed connections like ADSL is to permit new functionalities like video phone technologies and higher resolution imaging that till now have been hindered by the slow modem connects rather than just speeding up internet access. While faster internet access is great, higher speeds will give more bottle necks more frequently at the server level limited by the slow machines and O/S technologies. However, faster peer to peer communications like in a telephone (video) call will realize more market opportunities for these technologies that have been pent up for much too long and for the phone companies that want more growth opportunities. Cable's infrastructure just isn't capable of offering such services as efficiently as the telephone networks unless of course cable goes ATM which is highly unlikely and let's not even get into the security aspects of a shared network.

Just my two cents.
