I know all about the ip address solution. I realize its kinda of a privacy issue. if you are happening to be windows based and not using NT then knowing the ip can be fatal. Also if you are using the new alpha of ICQ (the one where you can publish pages from your logged in node) well if someone knows your ip there isn't much you can do to stop them from accessing your hard drive. But the common user won't know what to do with the IP.

However, if SI would say post a partial IP like say the last 2 numbers, it may provide a clue to the average investor. I know when you dial up you tend to get different IP's, but sometimes you get the same, its all a matter of which line you hit on your ISP.

I am sure anyways, Si already has this info and generally saves it for law enforcement issues.

And yeah i agree with your last statement. I think the trouble enters where people chance upon something and think they are missing out. Unless other research is done, their buy may be purely based on hype. I imagine, even with research, its still pretty much a 'good faith' or the 'reasonable person standard' approach to investing is pretty much our level of trust in the system (I realize this sentence may not make a lot of sense0.

In an ideal world people using SI would have two posts. Maybe 1/2 of SI could be labeled 'fiction/hype' the other half 'truth'. Then there would be no lawsuits or stuff like that.

the whole lawsuit issue is still a bit perplexing to me (with the internet).... The idea that I write something on a BBS somewhere, and someone somewhere else sues me because they acted on it in good faith and lost. (what if I originally said it in jest?) What law prevails? is it based on where I am when I type the message? or where the server is located? or what?

but thats another subject... and i am not a lawyer.

but back to the topic at hand. A partial ip maybe coupled with other info (public) may provide a bit of a clue to the random investor. Perhaps we should have each statement notarized or witnessed as we type? (no too complicated...)...
