Interesting conversation. While reading the past few posts, I'm struck with the fact that, in my experience, the bandwidth bottleneck isn't in my "last mile" connection, it is the various servers and routers. To make my point, try getting on with an online broker when the market drops 200 points; an 'e-tailer' near Xmas; or even our venerable SI when everybody has something to say.

I have a 56K modem and have never gotten a connect speed above 26.4K due to the limitations of my 'last mile.' Still, a 26K connection is tolerable compared to the < 1K bottlenecks I frequently get when contacting busy servers.

So, I guess my question for everybody is:

If the backbone can't support it, what difference does it make if the masses have high bandwidth connections?
