3Com Leads in Key Data Networking Market Segments Newly released Dell'Oro Group figures show 3Com's continued leadership in local area networking categories; data reaffirms 3Com's leadership in overall Ethernet market SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 23, 1998-- 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS - news) today announced that newly released information by analyst Dell'Oro Group reaffirms the company's overall leadership in the worldwide market for Ethernet technology-based local area networks (LANs), including key LAN switching market segments. Ethernet LAN switching technology provides small, medium and large business enterprises with fast networking for sharing data and for new, advanced multimedia applications. According to the updated market data for Q3CY98 on The Dell'Oro Group's web site (issued December 13), 3Com has maintained its worldwide leadership position in fixed configuration (i.e., stackable) Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) Layer 2 switching systems with 30.7% market share. The newly released figures also show that the company has maintained its worldwide leadership in overall 10/100/1000 Mbps stackable Layer 2 switching systems with 28.9% market share. The Dell'Oro figures placed 3Com in leadership positions of 31.1% and 44.6% market share for 10 Mbps shared Ethernet hubs and for 100 Mbps shared Fast Ethernet hubs, respectively. In addition, new Dell'Oro figures reaffirm the analyst group's November 1998 report which detailed 3Com's worldwide leadership in Gigabit Ethernet (1000 Mbps) LAN switching with 27% market share. 3Com continued its overall Ethernet LAN leadership through the third quarter ending September for the calendar year 1998 with 34.6% market share (Dell'Oro and Cahners In-Stat). Overall leadership in the Ethernet LAN equipment, more than three times its closest competitor, is based on worldwide shipments of Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit LAN hubs, switches and network interface cards. The Dell'Oro Group and Cahners In-Stat data is based on ports (i.e., connections) shipped. Today's announcement of these updated Dell'Oro Group market share figures for the third quarter of calendar year 1998 follows yesterday's announcement of 3Com's financial results for its second fiscal quarter ended November 27, 1998. 3Com reported that sales of $1.541 billion increased ten percent sequentially and 29 percent from $1.197 billion reported in the year ago quarter. ''Our performance indicates that large enterprises continue to migrate their networks from shared to fully switched Ethernet technologies, with Gigabit Ethernet switching at the LAN core and 10/100 Mbps switched Ethernet at the workgroup. Small and medium enterprises are rapidly adopting a mixture of shared and switched LAN technologies, generally at higher speeds than before,'' said Ron Sege, senior vice president, 3Com Enterprise Systems. ''These numbers also reflect 3Com's commitment to excellence in LAN switch and hub technology and the strength of our distribution and customer support channels worldwide. These solutions are meeting customers' demand to boost the performance of today's data-centric applications while building an infrastructure for the future applications based on the convergence of voice, video and data,'' added Sege. 3Com's Complete Solutions for Enterprises of all Sizes 3Com is a world leader in providing comprehensive, desktop-to-server, fully switched Ethernet solutions including: 3Com® Fast EtherLink® XL 10/100 PCI and Gigabit EtherLink Server network interface cards (NICs); SuperStack® II switches for desktop connections and small to medium-sized backbones; and CoreBuilder® chassis-based switches for large network backbones and campus interconnections.
