The rally began Tuesday after the information-technology company canceled a merger agreement with MatriDigm Corp. and said instead that it would increase its holdings in the firm. That news forced short sellers, who had placed bets that the stock would fall, to cover their positions. The shares ended with a gain of 25% Tuesday. Market players said the stock had been heavily shorted because high-speed storage companies' shares had been hit hard recently.
