I read that post as well. Not sure what direction YHOO mgmt is planning to take. If its to remain a mere portal, I would think they're out of step as this will increase their competition. In addition to competing against MSN & AOL, they would be now waging war against likes of EBay. Someone on YHOO board had talked about a merger with AMZN earlier, and I had thought that was the worse possible step YHOO could have taken.....thankfully, it was only a hypothetical discussion.

OTOH, everyone has been talking about market consolidation/integration and this vertical integration would provide YHOO with a lead over its competitors - the first mover advantage. From the financial viewpoint, very little is known to make an informed arguement. Depends on the terms of acquisition - it may be a classical buy or outsource question. I don't know much about the ONSL profitability to comment on direct revenue contributions, on the business alliances ONSL has, conflicts in business practices, cultures, alliances etc - and all of these are important considerations for a buyout, so I'll have to do some homework before commenting on all those factors.

From the ownership and competition viewpoint, the acquisition would enable expansion, more eyeballs, more advertising space and a new source of revenue...all of which had been expected. I guess YHOO would have a distinct advantage due to its market muscle and brand name, over the likes of EBay and UBid on one hand and MSN/AOL on the other hand. But then again, these maybe swallowed up by AOL/MSN and we'd be back at square one. Also, just becoz YHOO is good at the portal business, does not mean it can manage an inventory as well...it **is** a new LOB for YHOO so there's a concern there.

Hopefully by then users would have established brand loyalties....

To sum it all, I think it will be a long term investment and YHOOs first attempt (is it ?) to break away from the portal image. All that assuming the guy on YHOO board was serious !
