re: Israel policy

The main thing I like about Israeli policy is their keen understanding of the threats they face. Their dangerous Arab neighbors are thugs and psychopaths -- totally untrustworthy. The attempt, with American support and pressure, to lure the Palestinians from war to coexistence is bold and dangerous. To succeed, the Palestinians must crush their diehards without losing support of the masses. Israel could never have crushed the diehards with shifting the middle Palestinians into violent opposition. No one can say if these problems can be resolved. Americans have had to pressure the Israeli hardliners into supporting land for peace. To call these policies inept is to mistake the difficulty of badly split democracies in solving intractable political problems. I think everyone knows that an independent Palestine with an iron-clad peace treaty with Israel is the only long-term solution. Diehards on all sides will do whatever they can to prevent this from coming about. No one dare admit this solution, because many people -- Israelis, Palestinians, American friends of Israel, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt have to shift their positions considerably before it occurs. A peace pact between Israel, Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, with guarantees and development aid by the United States, EU, and UN is what must be hoped for.
