Jack you make a lot of assertions

For example that consumer long distance is getting cheaper, that new technology will force LD companies to reduce rates further, that Sprint (whose digital network is barely operational) will bypass the RBOC's successfully (how many networks do we need by the way all duplicating each others infrastructure!), that the "government" will champion the interests of consumers by regulating the monopoly wannabes (this reminds me of the Laffer curve and that Cornell professor who said deregulation in the airline industry would lead to lower fares) and of course that monopolies have to last 1000 years to be monopolies (a hundred is good enough.

Monopolies do exist Jack. Try your light switch, your gas pump, your local telephone service, and your PC OS as the more obvious ones. You really think that somebody out there cares about the consumer? Or that technology will triumph over economics?

Monopolies exist for a reason --- to control prices. Its called pricing power. They will be created wherever possible by businesses that can create them for the obvious economic advantage that they bring. That's the way things have been since Morgan, Rockefeller, and Carnegie, and they are not going to change because some techie thinks he can repeal the laws of economics with a "better" technology.

Even MSFT got to where it is by having the favored boy on board.Nice well mannered Harvard trained momma connected regional third generation capitalist comer.

Hope you still have your country club pass Jack.
