Stage Set for Smith Defection. HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - Will Smith has signed on to star in "K-PAX", a Universal Pictures film based on the notebooks of psychiatrist Dr. Gene Brewer. Smith will appear as "prot", a visitor to Earth from K-PAX, a planet of the K-RIL/MON dual star. The K System is located in the Earth constellation Lyra, at an interplanetary distance of about 7000 light-years. The plot revolves around prot's sessions with Brewer at Bellevue Hospital, where he was taken after being picked up by police in New York City. Shooting is planned for sometime next year, depending on Smith's schedule. The tentative release date is late next year.
