Genesis Direct Launches ProTeam.com Offering an Expansive and Substantive On-line Collection of Sports Merchandise - More Than 10,000 Products and Growing; Signs Agreement With Yahoo!
Business Wire - November 10, 1998 09:36
SECAUCUS, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 10, 1998--Genesis Direct, Inc. (Nasdaq:GEND) today announced the launch of ProTeam.com(R), the on-line channel for Genesis Direct's all-encompassing 1-800-ProTeam(R) sports brand. In connection with the launch of ProTeam.com (www.proteam.com), Genesis Direct has signed an agreement with Yahoo! that will provide visitors to Yahoo!(R) Sports (http://sports.yahoo.com) and relevant sports pages within yahoo.com with one-click access to Genesis Direct's ProTeam.com. Mr. David Sable, a founder of the Company and Chief Marketing Officer, commented, "The Internet has been a part of the Genesis Direct marketing strategy since the Company's inception three years ago. We believe the launch of ProTeam.com will provide the platform to enable us to further develop this critical segment of our business and capitalize on the explosive growth of on-line retailing." Mr. Sable added, "We are confident that Genesis Direct has the infrastructure in place to handle the additional sales volume that our increased selling presence on the web is expected to generate. Importantly, the marketing philosophy and systems infrastructure that we have already established will enable us to serve our current and new customers seamlessly through the Internet. We have increased the resources devoted to this area, and have put the appropriate software, people and facilities in place to support these operations. These measures, coupled with our extensive experience with the 15 web-sites we already operate, will provide a solid foundation for the anticipated growth of this business over the next several years." In conjunction with the launch of ProTeam.com, the Company also announced that it has signed an agreement with Yahoo! that will provide Genesis Direct with direct access to Yahoo!'s millions of users. Genesis Direct will initially leverage its dominant position in the sports category, and over the long- term, will utilize this operating model to offer other Genesis Direct brands, such as Kids and Entertainment, via the Internet. "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with a company of Yahoo!'s prestige, particularly as we launch ProTeam.com," Mr. Sable stated. "This agreement will provide us with a competitive advantage as we capture the attention of millions of Yahoo! users. This relationship will give us more exposure than ever before to a broad base of consumers who are inclined to shop on-line, and will enable us to link Yahoo!'s comprehensive sports programming to the extensive product offering of Genesis Direct's sports brands. What is particularly thrilling is our ability to surround the customer with many ways to shop, as we utilize our sophisticated information systems to market Genesis Direct products across various selling mediums." Stephen Samuels, Vice President of Genesis Direct's Interactive Media Group, commented, "We are exceptionally well positioned from all critical perspectives. First and foremost, we will have the benefit of Yahoo!'s tremendous presence on the Internet, which will provide us with direct access to our target audience of sports and entertainment enthusiasts.

And, of equal importance to our success in e-commerce, we have our own superior customer service organization, and we will be managing the inventory and fulfillment process ourselves from Genesis Direct's state-of-the-art distribution center."

Mr. Sable further commented, "We are seeing more and more opportunities in electronic commerce, which is a highly cost effective way to market our extensive product assortments. In particular, we see tremendous potential for the growth of our Sports brands, as sports enthusiasts searching for information are among the most frequent Internet users. We believe that our agreement with Yahoo! is a natural extension of this business, and are confident that Genesis Direct is especially wellpositioned to take advantage of this trend and capture an increased share of this expanding market. We have already established a dominant presence and successful track record of electronic commerce through the on-line stores we maintain as part of our exclusive relationships with major sports leagues. Additionally, we are entering the test phase of other opportunities in our Interactive Media Group, which include increased use of television and radio, as well as e-commerce kiosks within retail chains."

Genesis Direct is a leading database-driven specialty retailer in the rapidly growing universe of non-store shopping. With a current portfolio of 36 Company-owned brands, the Company offers products directly to consumers in targeted niche markets primarily through a variety of distinctive information-rich catalogs, as well as Internet websites and electronic media, including television and radio.

This press release may contain statements that are forward looking within the meaning of applicable federal securities laws and are based on Genesis Direct's current expectations and assumptions, which are subject to a number of risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results to differ materially from those anticipated.
