Right, Michael. Livingston resigned because he couldn't take the heat, by all indications. Mostly, it sounds like he really wasn't up for the job. Understandable in the current environment.

In a lengthy interview on Monday in his office, Livingston, by turns doleful and then smarting at certain lines of inquiry, said he resigned for several reasons. He said he had "no defense" for his extramarital behavior, that he had undermined his own credibility and that he wanted to send a message about the destruction caused by people like Flynt. ( nytimes.com )

I'm at a loss to distinguish the destruction caused by people like Scaife versus the destruction caused by people like Flynt, but I'm sure the moral reformationists have a better handle on these ethical subtleties. Maybe the Rev. Pilch will weigh in on that, good Pharisee that he is.

Oh, really?

Day 1 -- Livingston admits to having had numerous extra-marital affairs -- but only after he got caught. And gets a standing ovation from the House Republicans.

Day 3 -- Livingston quits as House Speaker-erect... I mean Speaker-elect!

What happened in between?

Day 2 -- The Religious Right (i.e. the real Republican leadership), led by Jerry Falwell, told him that many House Republicans will vote against him on the floor of the House.

You are right! The RR calls all the shots. The RR is the Republican Leadership.
