From today's Washington Post: S&P's Choice of AOL Adds Fuel to Internet Stocks' Fire

washingtonpost.com

From the story:

Weil said AOL is one of a handful of Internet stocks that have captured the confidence of professional money managers.

"Institutions have been buying AOL for some time," he explained. "If they want to be in that Internet space investment-wise, AOL and IBM are the only two safe bets. They are large-caps, they are liquid, they have a big float, so they are less volatile."

Though all sorts of Internet stocks have soared in recent weeks, analysts expect the market to divide into stocks selected by professional managers and stocks whose buyers are strictly small investors.

"There are the quality companies in the Internet space, whose values can still be defined on somewhat reasonable grounds," Weil explained. Those are the stocks that mutual funds and money managers are buying.

In contrast, he said, "the vast number of Internet aspirants have very little to offer. No brand name. No track record. They will become niche players. They might be bought up or they might just vanish. Their values are in dreamland."

And Merry Christmas, everyone!
