Paul,

It would appear that Intel sets AMD's processor pricing.

I hope that we will never again hear you complaining about AMD's pricing practices, and how it hurts Intel. Here is one example:

They (AMD) try to insure that nobody can make any money in a given product area by low-balling prices. They use this to gain market share.

Intel is (and always has been) the scoundrel in the x86 wars.

Paul - RE: "It would appear that Intel sets AMD's processor pricing."

According to techweb.com dated September 24,

"In the first quarter of next year, AMD
(company profile) is expected to further
reduce the line. While the 300-MHz K62
3-D is expected to be discontinued, the
333-MHz chip will be cut to $80; the
350-MHz chip will be cut to $106; the
380-MHz chip will be cut to $135; and the
400-MHz will be cut to $185, the source
said."

Pricewatch vs. article speculation vs. expected Celeron (http://www.techweb.com/wire/story/TWB19981222S0011)
400 $189 vs. $185 vs. $150-160
380 $159 vs. $135
366 $130 vs. not specified vs. $120-130
350 $108 vs. $106
333 $85 vs. $80 vs. $84-94

The only chip that may be affected by the Celeron prices is the K6-2 400, but I think the K6-2 400 will be postitioned against the PII 400, not the Celeron 400. The prices point toward that. This early release of the Celeron 400 was smart for Intel to hurt AMD, but dumb for Intel because the Celeron 400 will be just as fast as a PII 400.

Intel - on a low end kamikazee mission?
