Some were saying that half a year ago. :-) ;-) :-)

Doesn't this DVD conversion predate their entry into the SVCD market?

If so, the trend is from DVD to SVCD!?! :-)

Last I heard Shinco was making SVCD players, though I suspect they actually produce plenty of both.

What happened to that DVD conversion those articles mentioned anyway? I'm quite curious if it was a success, or if it failed for technical or political reasons, or if it was simply a rumor or an exaggeration. Anyone know?

As far as I know, it still is. You may not agree, but SVCD is bigger than DVD
in China, at least now and for the next 2 to 3 years....

Zoran announced their SVCD design. I wonder when ESS will announce its SVCD results.

Zoran Launches Reference Product for SuperVCD
Market in China

New Design Enables Manufacturers to Enter China SuperVCD Market Quickly With a
High-Quality, Feature-rich System

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--December 29, 1998-- Zoran Corporation (Nasdaq NM:ZRAN - news), a leading
provider of integrated circuits and software for digital video and audio enabled by compression, announced today the availability of
the SupraAVplayer[tm], a SuperVCD reference product. Based on Zoran's SupraAV decoder chip, the SupraAVplayer is fully
compliant with China's new SuperVCD standard, which was recently adopted by the Chinese National Technical Committee of
Standards. The SuperVCD (SVCD) standard is replacing the VideoCD (VCD) standard in China and offers enhanced features
and improved video quality over the older standard.

During 1997, over 15 million units based on the old VCD standard were sold in China. Players based on the SVCD standard are
now gaining momentum, and the market is growing rapidly. The SupraAVplayer enables Chinese manufacturers to conserve
valuable engineering resources and at the same time achieve time to market and deliver a high-quality, feature-rich SVCD player.
The SupraAVplayer includes advanced features such as built-in Karaoke, four-channel audio output, high-quality video, and it is
fully backwards compatible with the old VCD standard.

''We see a rapid shift in the VCD market to the new SVCD standard,'' said Dr. Shmuel Farkash, Vice President, Video Products
for Zoran. ''All of the major Chinese consumer electronics manufacturers are introducing products based on this new standard.
We believe that SVCD will rapidly replace the majority of the VCD players in the growing digital video market in China, where
more than 15 million units were sold in 1997.''

Based on Zoran's leading MPEG-2 video technology, the SupraAVplayer provides all the necessary features for a SVCD player in
addition to some ''add-on'' features. The feature set includes:

SVCD, VCD, Audio CD, CD-R, CD-RW Capability
Supports Philips or Sony Front End Drive
Forward and Backward Trickplay and Picture Zoom
Embedded Karaoke Functionality
Four Channel Audio Outputs with Volume Control
Normal and S-video Output
Two Microphone Inputs

The reference product is powered by Zoran's previously announced SupraAV[tm] decoder integrated circuit. The SupraAV
integrates into a single chip the decoding functionality required for full implementation of the SVCD standard. As part of Zoran's
StandardPlus (TM) strategy, a 40 MIPS audio DSP and video features were embedded into the chip, substantially improving audio
and video quality. Furthermore, by applying Zoran's unique SiliconSoftware[tm] concept, smooth and seamless integration of
innovative audio algorithms such as 3D surround and Karaoke are possible.

About the SupraAV Reference Product

The SupraAVplayer was developed specifically for manufacturers of SVCD players. The design is compatible with SVCD, VCD
and Audio CD. Manufacturers can use the reference product to develop a low-cost, feature-rich SVCD player. Deliverables for
the reference product include schematics, a bill-of-material, gerber files and firmware to complete the package. Manufacturers can
rapidly get to market with a SVCD player using the Zoran's reference product.
