Following along on your scarce water observation:
In his book, Golden Trade of the Moors, which I read when I lived in Libya, E. W. Bovill expounded a theory that the real reason for the Arab conquests lay in drastic climatic changes. According to Mr. Bovill, the Middle Eastern region became too dry to feed the population sometime after 500 A. D., leading to the conquest of northern Africa and most of the Iberian peninsula.

What ever happened to that scheme several years ago to tow iceburgs from the Artic to Saudi Arabia?
