5-6% sounds like last year's prediction. But I really respect Abby, so I'll factor her prediction into my planning.

Is this Abbey's way of saying sell? Why would anyone with any brains keep money in the market with an upside of just 5-6% after the tremendous speculative run we had this year. Can get almost as much in riskless money markets.

A few simple facts. The late 1997 selloff was 10% in the major averages. The late 1998 selloff was 20%. With speculation now far more advanced than it was last summer, I predict a drop of 30-40% in the market after it peaks in late winter or early spring. This drop probably will require at least 6 months to play itself out.

What we had in late 19967 and 1998 were BRIEF PANICS which almost always are good buying opportunities. But the next big selloff will take the form of a protracted bear market with numerous false rallies on the way down to keep hope alive.
