Well, thanks for the Christmas wishes, Bob. A very merry time was had by everyone here--we went to see the new movie "Dancing at Lughnasa", with Meryl Streep. It is not exactly a Christmas movie, but it is definitely about the tug between Catholic and pagans in Ireland. The film takes place in the nineteen thirties. It is also about trying to squeeze some joy out of life, even when there appear to be few opportunities, and the dangers inherent in risking doing that. I would highly recommend it.

Bob, on Christmas eve on PBS, David Gergen interviewed Cullen Murphy, the author of a recent book called "The Word According to Eve." Murphy states that there are now more women studying theology than men, and that this is a trend which over the next few hundred years will radically change Christianity. As women become Biblical scholars, they are tearing apart the way fables have been translated, for example, and also digging up from the archaeological record and almost forgotten texts the very strong roles that women played in Biblical times. I am really fascinated by Mary Magdalene, in particular, and what the reasons were for slandering her after the Gospels were written.
