However, the average joe has been lead to believe that any company that can get pushed out of an underwriters door into the Nasdaq is automatically going to conquer the earth. Many of them, being newbies, have literally no experience in the equity markets or with the internet. They have no idea how low the barriers to entry are, or how cut-throat the competition is going to be. All they know, and I repeat ALL they know, is that every IPO is heading straight to 300 bucks a share and a market cap of 10 billion dollars. I used to believe the "barriers to entry" argument, but I'm not sure anymore. Sure, it's relatively straight forward to build a kick ass website or portal or ecommerce venture, but AMZN and YHOO have taken such a lead that market share is going to be the hardest part to catch up. BKS and Borders seem to be executing well, but they don't have the online mindshare that AMZN has.. I've talked to a lot of my computer literate friends, and many of them swear by Amazon. As far as they're concerned, it's the ONLY online book seller. And once you buy something online through them and it comes in the mail without any problem, you're more likely to put your trust in them and click on that CD or Movies or Software (coming soon, no doubt) tab at the top of your page next time you want to buy something.. But let me state my position for the record. I've probably been one of the luckiest traders in the last two months. I bought calls the day before the $400 target, and I bought AOL calls the day before the S&P 500 announcement. However, I whole heartedly agree with Glenn et al about AMZN being over valued by traditional methods. But you can't short on valuation against momentum. Momentum will kick your butt everytime. There are safer stocks to short . Save your money. Bezos still has an arsenal of press released to prop up the price.. software sales, shop the web, etc. Wait for the chart to crack, then jump in. Then momentum will be working in your favour, instead of against you. Anyway, all IMHO I suppose. Happy holidays! James.
