Nihil, I think football is a mindless way to sit on your butt watching other people get exercise, while ignoring the gentle feelings of non-football addicts in your household, who would love to have some of your actual companionship.

Why is it that football dominates the national imagery so much? I know that at my job the managers and administrators for each department meet every morning in the 9:30 "huddle". Now a woman executive would probably never have come up with a name like that to describe the daily meeting. It is masculine, competitive and combative.

I am proud to say that in my department, several of us call it the morning cuddle, instead. The managers really care about each other, and touch each other when they greet each other, even though some of them are straight and a couple of them are gay, because they all have genuine affection for each other.

As to your reasons for Americans watching football over the impeachment hearings, they are amusing, of course. I think it has more to do with most Americans lacking interest in politics to the extent that they are irresponsible citizens. What if Bill Clinton is the anti-Christ? I don't even think anyone would notice!
