A Christmas Gift {from Jamila Verghese.} Friday, December 25, 1998 The Christmas gift Jamila Verghese -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It was a miraculous Christmas present. The world had never seen anything like it ever before. It was in a pure silver box studded with a million sparkling diamonds, rubies and pearls. It lay swathed in the richest of vermilion silk. On it was a card of 24 carat gold on which were engraved these remarkable words: ''From God to my special child, for a glorious Christmas!'' God planned what was to become heaven's most hectic and unusual Christmas Eve ever. Each angel and cherub was given a special assignment. Every human person in any hidden corner of the universe was to receive one of these remarkable gifts. A storm of angel wings swept the sky as the heavenly messengers scurried away, leaving identical parcels by every sleeping head in palaces, homes, hospitals, pavements, and jails; by the good, the bad and the despised. The starlit sky was heavy with suspense. Hell's cyberspace computers bleeped and blinked animatedly. The latest from heaven had been recorded. Every devil big or small was commissioned toperform his duty. The Devil coiled his arrow tipped tail around one arm and with a hard, sardonic smile, ordered his host to deal with this latest foolhardy heavenly idea which could shake the very foundations of hell if it worked. It was imperative that matters be dealt with in a very special satanic fashion. His armies despatched, he decided to pay the Lord a friendly visit. Inspecting his tapering nails delicately, a crafty smile on his lips, he said, ''What do You think You are proving by doing this, Lord?'' Wait and see, answered God. He sent for the recording angel.'' Have my children received my present?'' The angel was clearly embarrassed. ''Yes, Lord,'' he answered hesitantly, ''they did. They loved it, only there was some er.. trouble in the world!'' ''What kind of trouble?'', asked God. ''There were a number of murders Lord, and the police had to be called out, and .. and even they were fighting amongst each other for the presents!'' The Devil laughed out aloud. ''Good work, my children,'' he snarled, doing a little dance on his cloven hooves through the clouds. ''Not so fast!'' The warning note in God's voice was so pronounced that the Devil froze in his tracks. ''Let me see the report,'' said God gently, turning to the apprehensive recording angel. He was handed a long, carefully annotated scroll. ''This only mentions their immediate reactions, Lord. The killings and thefts came soon afterwards. I have not mentioned the killings and riots because I...'' God smiled at the anxious angel as He scanned the report. The recording angel smiled thankfully back. This is what was written on the scroll: The world's reactions to God's present in percentages: Recipients: Immediately tore off and sold the wrappings (money gained squandered or used for self-glorification) -- 80 percent. Put present unopened in a place of worship (3 percent began to worship it) (claimed as exclusively theirs by each religion, resulting in clashes) -- 10 percent. Put present unopened in bank lockers (for their own and their children's long term security) -- 8 percent. Shared proceeds of wrappings with the needy. Opened present (result: Joy and peace for all) -- 2 percent. God's smile was wonderful to behold. The sky burst into angel song. Bells rang and all the stars in heaven glowed with the warm Christmas joy of loving and sharing. ''I shall spend Christmas with that 2 percent'', said God. The Devil was completely nonplussed. ''But what mysterious object was in that present which so few people actually opened?'' ''Myself,'' said God, ''My peace and my love''.indian-express.com
