Sort of OT - a competitor's story (OR "Know your enemy"). Cable modem maker Terayon from Santa Clara, Calif., has filed IPO papers with the SEC, according to a story linked on another (the 3DFX) SI discussion. See the bottom of

techweb.com

for the full story. Apparently, 65% of recent sales by Terayon go to Shaw Commo, Cablevision, and Sumitomo.

And, Steve, DirecTV is owned by the cable company that serves WashDC (where I live). Surprise! Surprise! The '94 Commo Act didn't quite give us the competition we thought we'd get. When I (albeit ham-handedly and only a little scientifically) priced the "direct" services I wanted and compared them with my current cable bill, the prices came to within a few dollars of each other when the cost of the dishes and boxes was amortized over five years.
Happy Holidays and sincere wishes for a prosperous (and financially boring) New Year.
